Associate professor Clara Marika Velte defense her dissertation: “Non-Equilibrium Turbulence – A combined Emperical-Theorectical Approach Toward Improved Understanding in the Post-Kolmogorovean Era”

Turbulence, the irregular, chaotic motion of fluids such as air and water, remains one of the most challenging and important problems in classical physics. For more than 80 years, the dominant theory of turbulence has assumed that energy is transferred smoothly between flow scales in a state of local equilibrium. While this theory has been successful in idealized situations, most real turbulent flows in nature and engineering operate far from equilibrium. Such non-equilibrium turbulence is therefore the most common form of turbulence, yet it is also among the least understood and where we have the greatest needs.

This Doctor Technices dissertation investigates turbulence under these non-equilibrium conditions by combining theoretical analysis, advanced experiments and modern data analysis and simulation techniques. A new experimental facility was developed to study a forced non-equilibrium turbulent jet under controlled conditions using high-resolution laser-based measurements, enabling detailed observation of how energy is transferred across flow scales and allowing direct measurement of key turbulence parameters that have previously been difficult or impossible to access experimentally.

The results provide new insight into the fundamental physics of turbulence and contribute to the development of improved models for predicting turbulent flows in engineering and environmental systems – precisely the regimes where reliable predictions are most needed.
