Professor Gimsing received his Master’s degree from DTU in 1959. He had his academic career at ‘Danmarks Ingeniørakademi’ from 1962, and from 1975 at DTU where he was appointed Professor in structural engineering.
Professor Gimsing was a brilliant lecturer and author of textbooks, inspiring many students to pursue a career in civil engineering in practice and academia.
In particular, Professor Gimsing’s passion for and deep knowledge in bridge engineering has been a great inspiration for many students, scholars, and colleagues worldwide, and no doubt contributed significantly to Denmark’s leading position in this field.
Outside DTU, Professor Gimsing also contributed significantly to his field and to society. Together with Docent Kaj Madsen, Professor Gimsing formed the consulting company Gimsing og Madsen in 1969 after winning a concept competition for the design of the Great Belt Connection.
Professor Gimsing has over the years contributed significantly to the development of the bridge infrastructure in Denmark and abroad. He has served on design boards, technical committees and as an active member of Danish and international professional associations, including the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences, The Danish Society of Engineers and The Danish Society for Structural Engineering.
Professor Gimsing was appointed honorable member of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) in 1996, received the DTU Gold Medal for his contribution to research and teaching in 2004 and the IABSE International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering in 2019.
Professor Gimsing was passionate about his profession, but also widely known for his warm and generous personality – he will be deeply missed.
