Microstructural Characterization Labs

The Microstructural Characterization Labs provide sample preparation and microstructural characterization supporting fundamental science and innovation in metallic and ceramic materials within a wide range of application areas.

The Microstructural Characterization Labs possess:

  • X-ray diffractometer for quantitative and qualitative phase analysis, macrostrains and residual macrostresses, microstrains and size of nanocrystalline grains and preferred crystallographic grain orientations. High-speed acquisition and heating/cooling stage (-175 °C to 1150 °C in vacuum), enabling real-time measurements of evolving microstructures
  • Two Field-Emission-Gun Scanning Electron Microscopes capable of Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Electron BackScatter Diffraction (EBSD)
  • Transmission electron microscope with scanning transmission electron microscopy possibility, double tilt sample holders and a picoindenter for in-situ plastic deformation
  • Hardness testers, including nanoindentation
